This species is an important part of it's mangrove ecosystem. Sloth’s fur is also home to a range of fungi that are bioactive against strains of the parasites that cause malaria and Chagas disease

The green algae found in the fur of the pygmy three-toed sloth is thought to be symbiotic, providing camouflage to the sloth at no detriment to the sloth’s health. Their endearing nature makes them a key global ambassador for rainforest protection
